DP World Egypt welcomed Mr. Ahmed Amawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Customs Authority, to its Sokhna terminal during an official visit recently, to explore new areas of collaboration and accelerate trade at one of the Red Sea’s most strategic ports.
Since commencing operations in 2008, DP World has invested more than US$ 1 billion in Egypt, cementing its role as a key contributor to the national economy. The visit underscored Sokhna’s vital role in Egypt’s logistics ecosystem, with an annual handling capacity of 1.75 million TEUs, and a growing share of the country’s trade.
During the visit, Mohammed Shihab, CEO of DP World Egypt & North Africa, showcased the company’s latest projects, including the development of a state-of-the-art logistics zone in Sokhna. Currently under construction with an investment of USD 85 million spanning 300,000 square meters. The facility will feature modern infrastructure, including general and cold storage warehouses, cargo yards, dedicated areas for empty containers, and integrated services that create tangible value for both local and international companies.
“These projects are designed to boost logistics efficiency and fast-track customs procedures in line with the government’s objective of cutting clearance times by the end of 2025. Our partnership with the Egyptian Customs Authority is a cornerstone in strengthening Egypt’s trade ecosystem, while our investments in advanced digital solutions and operational excellence aim to position Sokhna as a global benchmark for speed and service quality,” said Shihab.
Ahmed Amawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Customs Authority, expressed his appreciation for DP World Egypt’s role in advancing the country’s transport and logistics sector. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with DP World in pursuit of Egypt’s national strategic objectives, while further enhancing the international competitiveness of Egyptian ports.
2024 Achievements
DP World Egypt’s leadership team also reviewed the company’s 2024 achievements, underscoring Sokhna’s position as Egypt’s premier trade gateway on the Red Sea.
• The terminal achieved an annual handling capacity of 1.75 million TEUs, supported by advanced infrastructure, including 29-yard cranes and 1,194 reefer plugs.
• Refrigerated container exports nearly doubled versus 2023, reinforcing Sokhna’s role as a central hub for agricultural and food exports.
• 21% of Egypt’s total trade was routed through Sokhna and projected to reach 24% this year.
• Diversifying Sokhna’s services beyond container handling with 2,000 Nissan vehicles exported to Jebel Ali Port in the UAE.
• Supporting cruise tourism by welcoming 60,000 cruise passengers aboard MSC Cruises vessels.
Through these investments and milestone achievements, DP World Egypt continues to cement its position as a trusted partner in the development of Egypt’s ports and logistics sector, while reinforcing the country’s role as a leading regional hub for trade and cargo movement.
