On the occasion of Eid Al Adha and as part of the ongoing DAMAC Fresh Slate Initiative, The Hussain Sajwani – DAMAC Foundation (HSDF) has paid off the second financial obligations of detainees charged with petty crimes.
In April, the DAMAC Fresh Slate Initiative was launched in partnership with Dubai Police General Command, to aid detainees in Dubai’s Punitive and Correctional Institutions who have been charged with petty offences. The funds will go to both men and women detainees, allowing for their release back into society.
The Foundation earmarked AED 2 million for the project which enabled the release of detainees on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha.
Major General Dr Mohammad Abdullah Al Murr, Director of the General Department of Human Rights at Dubai Police said, when the initiative was first launched, that the generous funds provided by HSDF helped families struggling financially, exemplified Islamic values and upheld social cohesion and family unity.
“The joint-effort with Hussain Sajwani-DAMAC Foundation will establish a new stage of mutual cooperation and reflects our commitment to being a positive force for good in the UAE,” Maj. Gen Al Murr added.
Meanwhile, DAMAC Founder and Chairman, Hussain Sajwani said “Everyone deserves a second chance, and my hope is these detainees will be able to return to their families, look after their welfare and turn their life around,”
The DAMAC Fresh Slate Initiative is part of the Foundation’s pipeline of a trio of CSR activities for 2022 which includes the Dubai Schools Project, which provides education scholarships for Dubai-based UAE national children. A third campaign is set to be launched later in the year in support of young entrepreneurs and SMEs.
In May of this year, the ‘One Million Arab Coders’ initiative — of which HSDF was a chief backer — wrapped up after a successful five-year run. Organised under the umbrella of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) and led by the Dubai Future Foundation, the programme succeeded in attracting more than one million Arab young men and women from 80 countries to participate in the initiative and learn the language of coding.
