The Ultimate Aegean Road Trip Through Türkiye’s Scenic Routes, Ancient Wonders and Local Flavours

Travel is full of new trends and ways to explore, but some travel habits still hold their appeal. Road trips are one of them, offering the freedom to explore at one’s own pace, share experiences with travelling companions and create lasting memories along the way. As highlighted in Booking.com’s 2026 Travel Predictions, road trips are increasingly shaped by spontaneity, discovery and shared experiences.

With its diverse landscapes, cultures and experiences, Türkiye offers something new around every road. From scenic countryside and ancient sites to coastal towns and local flavours, each route reveals a different side of the country. Türkiye’s Aegean region is particularly well suited to road trips, combining a lacelike coastline and turquoise waters with charming coastal towns, ancient heritage, rich cuisine and a laid-back lifestyle. Along the way, picturesque stops and unexpected discoveries turn the journey into an experience in itself. Let’s explore some iconic road trip highlights on Türkiye’s Aegean coast.

Gallipoli, Troy and Assos: Where History Meets the Aegean

Your Aegean Road trip can begin in Çanakkale, where history and coastal beauty come together. Start in Gallipoli, exploring the historic sites and memorials of the Gallipoli Peninsula before continuing to the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Troy, where more than 5,000 years of history unfold across ten archaeological layers. A visit to the award-winning Troy Museum offers a deeper insight into the ancient city and its remarkable discoveries. From Troy, continue south towards Assos, where ancient heritage gives way to the turquoise waters and scenic landscapes of the Aegean coast. Nestled in the village of Behramkale, Assos is known for its remarkably cool, refreshing waters, setting it apart from many other coastal destinations in Türkiye. Here, you can camp by the sea or stay in a charming boutique hotel before cooling off in crystal-clear coves such as Kadırga Bay. You can also visit the Temple of Athena, which offers panoramic views, and enjoy fresh fish at a restaurant in the harbour area. As you continue south, you’ll pass the legendary Kaz (Ida) Mountains, renowned for their pristine air. Along the foothills, you can stop at picturesque villages such as Adatepe and Yeşilyurt before reaching Ayvalık.

Ayvalık: From Timeless Coast to Charming Island

Once in Ayvalık, start your visit with the famous Ayvalık toast before heading out to explore its beautiful beaches, from Sarımsaklı to Altınova. Beyond the coastline, you can wander through the town’s charming streets and discover historic landmarks, including the Old Bazaar, Ayazma Church and the Saatli Mosque. For some of the region’s most spectacular views, make your way to Şeytan Sofrası (Devil’s Table), a hilltop overlooking the Aegean. You can also take a detour to Cunda Island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. This small island is renowned for its seafood restaurants, where you can enjoy a true Aegean feast featuring calamari, shrimp, octopus and papalina (a local sprat fish), accompanied by a variety of traditional mezes.

Çeşme: İzmir’s Iconic Peninsula

Continue south to İzmir, stopping in Bergama to explore its ancient heritage and charming town centre before heading to the Çeşme Peninsula. Here, crystal-clear waters, healing thermal springs, historic landmarks such as Çeşme Castle, lively summer evenings, and beautiful beaches await. Alaçatı, meanwhile, has earned an international reputation as one of Türkiye’s top destinations for kitesurfing. Food lovers will also find Urla a highlight. Known for its acclaimed routes and MICHELIN-recognised restaurants, the town offers exceptional farm-to-table dining experiences that showcase the rich flavours of the Aegean.

Kuşadası: A Summer Escape Neighbouring Ephesus

As you leave Urla’s lush landscapes and coastal charm behind, the road takes you further south towards Selçuk and Kuşadası. Make a stop in Selçuk to explore the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Ephesus and the charming village of Şirince, recognised as a World’s Best Tourism Village by UN Tourism. From here, continue to Kuşadası, one of Türkiye’s most important cruise and tourism hubs, where numerous beaches and coves await. Popular spots include Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi), Sevgi Beach, and the bays of İçmeler, Aydınlık, Kavaklıburun and Karasu, all located within the boundaries of the Dilek Peninsula–Büyük Menderes Delta National Park. For those looking to explore further, renting a boat is a great way to discover secluded coves and hidden stretches of coastline. As the day draws to a close, head over to Pigeon Island to watch the sunset. Kuşadası also offers a diverse culinary scene, ranging from waterfront seafood restaurants to traditional village eateries serving regional specialities.

Didim: Another Jewel in Aydın

Leaving Kuşadası behind, continue south along the coast to Didim. Located between Kuşadası and Bodrum, Didim is home to beautiful beaches such as Altınkum, Sarıkum, Huzur, and Akbük, as well as hidden coves like Cennet, Akvaryum, and Saplı Ada, which you can explore on daily boat tours. Beyond its beaches, Didim also offers a glimpse into the region’s ancient past. Ancient Didim, or Didyma, was once a sacred sanctuary of Miletus. Today, you can explore the Temple of Apollo, with its Ionic columns and famous stone-carved Medusa relief.

Bodrum: The Ultimate Destination of Road Trips

After Didim, the final stop of your Aegean Road trip is Bodrum. A favourite destination for luxury holidays in Türkiye, Bodrum offers everything from five-star hotels to charming campsites. With Blue Flag beaches, stylish beachfront venues, diving spots and spectacular bays to explore on a Blue Voyage, the town promises unforgettable experiences. Known for its whitewashed houses and fragrant mandarin orchards, Bodrum also boasts historical treasures such as Bodrum Castle and the ruins of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. In the MICHELIN-recognised town, you can also enjoy a spectacular dinner with the freshest catch of the day, locally sourced produce and regional flavours.

Insider Tip: If you’re not ready for the road to end, continue south from Bodrum to discover more unforgettable coastal escapes where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, including Datça, Marmaris and Fethiye. From there, the road continues to Antalya, the jewel of the Turkish Riviera, where breathtaking coastal stops await from Kaş to Alanya.
