More than 2,000 athletes from over 60 countries are set to take on the demanding trails of the Kaçkar Mountains as the event gets under way in Rize tomorrow

Lush highlands, historic villages and dramatic Black Sea scenery underline the Kaçkar region’s appeal as a destination for nature, adventure and authentic travel experiences

Renowned for its lush, untamed landscapes, Türkiye’s Black Sea region has recently found itself in the international sporting spotlight. The region’s soaring peaks, steep valleys, dense forests and high-altitude trails make it a natural arena for endurance sports. From 11 to 13 September, this remarkable geography will take centre stage as KAÇKAR BY UTMB 2026 welcomes elite athletes from around the world for its second edition.

Part of the globally renowned UTMB World Series, this premier trail-running event brings together a shared passion for endurance, nature and adventure. Supported by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), KAÇKAR BY UTMB leads runners through the rugged terrain and breathtaking landscapes of the Kaçkar Mountains in Çamlıhemşin, Rize. More than a demanding race above the clouds, it offers an unforgettable journey of physical and mental endurance amid some of the Black Sea region’s most spectacular scenery.

Run Shepherds’ Paths: Discover The Black Sea Region’s Uncharted Trails

In its second edition, KAÇKAR BY UTMB continues to consolidate its position as one of Türkiye’s most prominent outdoor sports events. While Rize welcomed tens of thousands of sports enthusiasts alongside 1,878 athletes from 59 countries last year, more than 2,000 athletes from over 60 countries are expected to participate this year. Beyond offering a world-class sporting experience, the event will also offer an opportunity to explore the rich local culture first-hand.

Runners from Türkiye and around the world are set for an unforgettable journey at this year’s KAÇKAR BY UTMB, where sporting challenge meets spectacular scenery. The routes will take athletes along historic caravan paths and old shepherd trails, passing through lively local settlements and ancient villages.

For the 2026 edition of Kaçkar by UTMB, races will be held across four different courses. Athletes will compete in the Kaçkar 100K, Kaçkar 50K, Kaçkar 20K, and Ayder 4K categories. All routes will start from the Ayder Highland.

The Kaçkar 100K route demands pure endurance, focus, and reverence for the mountains, covering 82 km with 5,600 m of elevation gain. Athletes will climb mountain ridges, pass through valleys and visit 12 mountain villages – each reflecting the unique character of the Kaçkar region. Covering 44 km with over 3,000 m of elevation gain, the Kaçkar 50K delivers the same mountain magic without pushing the limits of the 100K. Lush forests, Kemer Mountain, and Hazindak and Samistal Highlands, where 300-year-old stone houses tell stories of resilience, are showcased all along the course.

The Kaçkar 20K also offers an unforgettable taste of trail running throughout varied terrain. Although it is a shorter course, the altitude, changing weather, crisp mountain air and vibrant village scenery, still demand focus and preparation. Meanwhile, the Ayder 4K focuses on discovery rather than speed. Nevertheless, it delivers an authentic sample of the region’s signature terrain. Covering approximately 4 km with 230 m of elevation gain, it is the perfect introduction for first-time trail runners.

Kaçkar Mountains: Heaven on Earth

Extending parallel to the sea in the eastern Black Sea region, the Kaçkar Mountains span the border between Rize and Artvin. This earthly paradise is one of the world’s richest areas for biodiversity. With this untamed natural beauty, the Kaçkars stand firmly among Türkiye’s most celebrated outdoor sports destinations. Hiking routes that begin along riverbanks wind their way toward higher elevations, sometimes breaking through the clouds to reach sweeping plateaus. Numerous glacial lakes dot these vast highlands. Here, hikers can pause their journey, pitch their tents by the water, and immerse themselves in an endless supply of pure mountain air.

Beyond hiking, mountaineering, and camping, the Kaçkars stand out as a premier four-season destination that comes alive in winter. Snow enthusiasts can enjoy alpine skiing across high plateaus such as Ovit and Handüzü, where pristine winter conditions draw visitors. For those chasing off-piste adventures on untouched powder, the Kaçkars have built an international reputation as one of Europe’s top destinations for heliskiing. High above the tree line, freeride snowboarders and skiers can carve their own lines across vast alpine plateaus.
